That's great you're researching the Grosvenor Estate! I see there's a talk on 20th March (2025), which I'll attend - hope to meet you there and compare notes!

Fascinating history. I'm researching the history of the Grosvenor Estate on the other side of Camberwell Road on the same side as John Ruskin Street. I would be interested to hear from local residents or families with any connection to the Grand Surrey Canal. My understanding was that the estate was built for workers but I have found no clear connection, despite our proximity.

I just came across this website by chance and have loved being transported back to the St George’s of the 1960’s. So many of the names mentioned are familiar and bring happy memories. My father was the vicar from 1965 to 1975 so I lived in the vicarage from age 8 to 18. I loved the old church and the community around it. I was so horrified by the abandonment of the church and its later fire, not to mention the demolition of all those streets of houses, that I’m sure it must have contributed to my career as an architect working mostly with historic buildings, trying to make sure that they remain useful and beautiful wherever possible.

I remember Gwen Rymer very well. She lived in the basement flat below our house in Wells Way. My parents, Derek and Betty Watts were very involved with St Georges. Dad was a church warden. Hi Ron,
I remember yourself, along with Billy and John Shields at the time I was Assistant Scout Leader from 1965 along with Cyril Evans and Walley Channon the other leaders you may remember. I have been a leader from 1965 in other scout groups and gave up two years ago. Pete and Andy Edmonds are still my closest friends.

It would be good to hear from you.

We were married on 21st March 1970 so could not celebrate our Golden Wedding because it was the first week end of lockdown. We had hoped for a +1 celebration in 2021 but alas still lockdown! Hopefully we will be able to celebrate our Diamond one in 2030!
